CHAPTER EIGHT
We led Clara to an empty meeting room. Taylor went in while Eric, Kari and I stood outside. Clara had no clue that she was about to be in the middle of an interrogation by one of the best in the city.
"What is this about?" Clara asked. "Did one of the leads turn up something?"
"Yes," Taylor said, his face not giving away anything.
"That's great news! What did you find?"
"We found out that you rented a white Ford truck recently."
If Clara reacted to our discovery, I couldn't tell. "What does that have to do with anything?"
"Well, we discovered after getting access to footage from a traffic camera that the car that nearly killed Red was also a white Ford truck."
"Wait a second..." she realized that she was suddenly a suspect. "You guys think I tried to run my own boyfriend over? I was the one that pushed him out of the way! And how do you explain the guy yesterday that shot at us?"
"We never found a gun, and the guy we ran down nearby had an alibi for the hit and run. Besides, it could've easily been a noise that you made with some kind of electronic device."
"You are accusing me of being behind the death threats yet none of the actions you are attributing to me qualify as attempted murder. So I don't know what point you are trying to make."
She was right. She was the one that tackled Red so that he wouldn't get hit by the truck. If she had known it was coming, she could've placed herself on the other side of the car where she wouldn't have been hit. But she didn't.
"You are trying to create the existence of this person sending death threats to Red. If you think about everything that has happened, it all could be pointed back to you. You could've tampered with his computer, you could've made the gunshot noise and you could've rented the truck that you had a friend use to make it look like a failed hit and run attempt."
"That's not true!" Clara said on the verge of tears.
Taylor ignored her outburst and continued, "And that explains why you would bring us into your plan as well. It would become public knowledge that we were investigating a death threat and that every time Red came close to death, you were accounted for. So later on when you finally killed him for real, the police would likely chase after someone that doesn't exist."
"I'm not trying to kill him!"
"Why rent a second car then? You haven't explained what it was for."
After a few moments of thinking she finally said, "I rented it for a friend."
"This person can't rent a car for themselves?"
"She isn't old enough to," she answered dejectedly. She knew how bad her story sounded.
"Then get her on the phone and have her bring the truck over so that you can show us that it doesn't have any scratches or dents in it from the hit and-"
"She's out of town," she said before he could even finish the sentence.
